2010 Season Officially Starts

After a long cold winter its always great to see green leaves on the trees and BMX. Here is Ronnie Gaska kicking off the new season at Shoreham's first practice session on Saturday. Unfortunately racing was cancelled on Sunday due to rain.

Shoreham Regional National

This past weekend was the Shoreham Regional National for the 2010 season. It was definitely a must see if you are a TLI fan. This being the first race the team hit since making that huge statement at the Grands, you had to know it would be awesome. TLI was ready to pick up right where they left off, and continue to be unstoppable. Starting Friday off with a TLI/Standard clinic which turned out real well, many of the riders who attended the clinic were winners during the weekend. Saturday was two races, the 2009 Regional Championship followed by the 2010 Regional Qualifier (Day 1). Sunday only consisted of the 2010 Regional Qualifier (Day 2).

Dugan Started everything off when he and Bivona drew the same moto for Day 1. With a ridiculous first straight, Dugan was out in front every race which meant Bivona had to play catch-up the entire weekend. This made the 26-34 Expert class the most exciting races of the weekend. Saturday's 2 moto system was split between Dugan and Bivona making the main event something you can not miss. Once again Dugan showed his uncanny ability to get out in front and was able to shut down Bivona for the entire race therefore claiming the victory and Bivona had to settle for the second.

Next up was Kilcullen....Talk about domination !!! The photo above represents the closest anyone was to him the entire weekend. The 19-25 Expert class just may be one of the hardest classes out there, but that wasn't going to be an issue this weekend. Kilcullen started Saturday off with a win in both motos, pretty much coasting his way to victory in both instances. When it came to the main, nothing changed...Kilcullen ripped down the gate and was way in front by the first turn, he continued to ride his own race and just expanded his lead as the race went on. Finishing with a real solid perfect for the day.

If you are on the inside of Dugan on the first gate, you have to take advantage of it and get as close to him as possible before the first turn. Only problem is that means you would have to go almost as fast as him in the process. That explains the look on Bivona's face heading into the first turn in the picture above. This might be the fastest he has ever gone into the first turn in his entire life. So Sunday being a three moto system that meant there was an extra race to run. First moto Dugan held off Bivona for the win, but Bivona prevailed in the next two. This meant that up until this point Dugan and Bivona each had three wins and it would come down to the main on Sunday for a tie-breaker. Wouldn't you know it Dugan tears down the gate and enters the first turn in the lead and once again Bivona had to make moves to try and close this one out. Exiting the third turn and hitting the Stairway almost simultaneously Bivona was able to get the inside line leading into the next turn, ultimately taking the lead and barely holding Dugan off for the win. Definitely and exciting race to see, just wait until this spring when Dugan, Bivona, and Kilcullen will all be in the same class.

Sunday was more of the same for Mike Kilcullen, on Saturday he was nothing but perfect and wanted to continue the streak for Sunday as well. In all three of the motos, Kilcullen was able to take a significant lead and hold down the wins. So this left him with a perfect in Saturday's race, and three moto wins for Sunday. Now it was only one race left to block him from earning the maximum points possible for a race weekend. Kilcullen was determined to complete this perfect weekend and it was about to get so real. Out of the gate Rob Reese seemed to have a great start and was going to give Kilcullen a run for his money. After the Dragons back, Kilcullen decided to turn on the jets and pull away to race his own race. Completing a flawless lap in the Main to take the win was a fitting end to a flawless weekend.

Clinic at Shoreham BMX Hosted by TLI/Standard

TLI/Standard will be hosting a clinic on Friday, October 30 2009 at the Shoreham BMX track. The clinic will be from 12-2pm and participants will receive an inside perspective and helpful tips/techniques from the riders who designed and built the track. All riders will receive a TLI T-shirt and a goodie bag, and the cost is just $20.

NBL Grand Nationals 2009 - Updated

This past weekend some of TLI's riders made the trip to Louisville, KY for the 2009 NBL Grand Nationals. Dugan, Bivona, Killcullen, Nugent, and interim TM Iarocci all drove down to show off the new TLI/Standard race jersey's and plates. As usual, a huge statement was made....Someone was quoted saying..."You guys look like the mafia"...obviously the new uniforms stood out, but what really had people talking was how TLI was racing. Whether it was because we were running hot laps or crashing extremely hard, either way TLI was topic of conversation.

TLI is happy to announce that we have worked out a deal with Standard Byke Company and will be back on Standard 125R (or 125RG) models real soon !!!

All of us at one point or another have rode Standard frames and we all agree that we never felt more comfortable riding on any other frame. Years back, people associated Long Island with Standard Bykes and TLI is happy to make the first step towards that same association. Standard Byke Company has always been known for high quality bike parts. Long Island has always been known for high quality bike riders. It is no wonder why the two are a natural combination.

We are all very eager to work with them for the season to come !!!

Official TLI debut !!!! This was the first official race that the entire team was able to attend. The weekend started off with Ronnie Gaska and a huge win in his first moto. That set the tone for the entire weekend. TLI killed it, we made a huge statement, and we had a ton of fun doing it. We have 5 more weeks until we can do it all over again in Trumbull, CT

Extreme Makeover - Shoreham Edition

Shoreham BMX has been steadily declining for some years now, and its been tough to see this going on given its role in the BMX industry. Shoreham is rich in history, and has produced some of the most talented BMX riders. Ever since the infamous "Triple Step" was taken out, the track started to decline not only in rider count but in track quality as well. After being plagued with a horrible track layout and ridiculous turns since 2000, the race crew decided it was time to bring back Shoreham as we all knew it in years past. With help from more people than ever, and from names that you won't believe. Shoreham is back and better than ever with a track design that will flow from start to finish. Check out some of the photos below for a sneak peek, and I strongly urge you to come out and ride the track this year.

"Dragon's Back" - Jump into the first turn is very influenced by supercross, and is 35 feet long from peak to peak.

"Stairway to Heaven" - This is two step-ups back to back to create the effect of a downhill pitched straight. Which plays into the design of the next jump.

The new triple is very South Park influenced indeed !!!! Taking one jump out of this straight was part one, and making nice big jump that the younger kids can also ride was part two, the result is a nice flowing section which keeps your speed going up.

This is a small clip from the oak park trails, featuring John Lee and Reid Carleton. This was filmed in 1999 sometime, the trails were awesome and I wish they were still exactly like this. If you were lucky enough to ever ride them I am certain that you feel the same way.

1987-91 bmx edit

This was originally going to be a history of Shoreham BMX video but, while searching for some footage I found some real old NY State Championship footage too. It was 1987 and I was 8 yrs old, and usually came in dead last...I squeaked in a 7th here. At the end of that race you see me and Frankie Orlando at the finish line, he always beat me. Then you will see Bruce Mulligan racing, he always won, I don't remember him ever losing. Then you will see a short clip of the crowd and you see how everyone used to go to a state series. Tony Celli, Mrs. Boyle, Mrs. Gaska, Mr. O'rourke, I think there may even be a lofreddo in the background. Then you see me getting my number plate and I am standing next to Ronnie Gaska at 11 or 12 yrs? Lastly you will see Shoreham in 1989 where Chris Giacomazzo finishes with a two, and then a clip from 1990 Shoreham Regional where you see Ronnie and possibly Bird too? Again....Check out how much better shoreham was in 1990 than it is today in 2008? Something has to be done about that!!!!

I borrowed a tape from Bossler, for a compilation I am making and at the end there was a few races from Flemington, NJ. I am not exactly sure if its from circa '97 or '98, but I do remember that I traveled there with Keith Terra and his girlfriend Sara in the Broheim. I am also pretty sure that it was the race that I turned pro at? Anyway, I wish there were more clips to show how Long Islanders used to run the whole industry back then!!!

Not a long video, but effective nonetheless.....Back in January of 2003 part of the L.I. crew navigated to Woodward, PA to embark on our yearly trick ferret session. Bivs, Dugan, Reid, Gannon, Dean, Kenny, and Russ were all in attendance. I know that my mission on this particular trip was to learn turndowns. So the trip was a failure for me and I still can't do them to this day...Pretty lame huh? Anyhow this short clip was something we set up after a long day of riding and we were all supposed to crash into Dugan at the bottom of the ramp.......Dugan was a genius and decided to get out of the way causing a train wreck.

Shoreham Jump Comp 1993

In 1993 Shoreham had bigger and better jumps than it has right now here in 2008. This is when it was fun to go to shoreham, unfortunately the people who run the track are not concerned with how fun it is. Anyway, this is a video that was edited by Keith Terra and Tom Bivona, its just a small clip from the video that was made for the Shoreham Dinner that year.
